Francis Huxley (1923 – 2016) was a social anthropologist, traveller to unmapped lands of the mind, a mythologist, known for his ground-breaking narrative anthropology. After early research in the Brazilian Amazon, he ventured to Haiti to investigate the role of Voodoo in the healing of mental distress. From his time there he produced a widely read sympathetic text of the social-psychological functions of Voodoo and accrued a large collection of personal photographs (1072) of the people he encountered, both in their everyday and ritual settings. This album is a companion volume to our previous biography; Francis Huxley and the human condition; Anthropology Ancestry and Knowledge, as well as being a visual record of Francis’ time in Haiti and a testimony to his ability to enter open-mindedly into the world of a people who have been much misunderstood.

Rage provides helpful insights into an unpredictable emotion. This book on sudden attacks or fits of rage, first published in German in 2007, takes us on a multi-layered, interesting journey through the cultural history and social psychology of this unpredictable emotion. It gives answers to the questions: Where does rage come from? How does rage manifest itself? And what can we do about it? It outlines the various perspectives of perpetrators and victims, exploring their social and cultural context. Moving case studies provide numerous helpful hints and insights for understanding rage. This second, revised edition features a more diverse and multifaceted range of sources, which offer answers to this unpredictable emotion from the world of psychotherapy. The author points out the potential in therapeutic aspects of self-empowerment which, with regular practice, can be applied to our everyday lives. A book for those personally affected, their loved ones, and for people in the caring professions.

A fourth-generation member of the illustrious Huxley dynasty, Francis Huxley forged an unusual and innovative career making key contributions to social anthropology, mental health care, and the protection of indigenous peoples. Through an examination of his life and work, this book comprises an unorthodox exploration of the human condition, one which is simultaneously biographical, philosophical, cultural, historical, political and epistemological. Huxley’s story tells us enables us to see how the production and dissemination of ideas can be understood in an intergenerational context which is familial and sociological. In assessing the contemporary relevance of his work, links are forged between the dominant philosophical, cultural, scientific and political themes which dominate the turbulent early 21st century and the enduring questions which have driven human beings in the search to understand themselves and their place in the world. Readers from across the humanities and social sciences as well as those interested in biography per se will find much of interest.

This book examines the phenomenon of silence in relation to human behaviour from multiple perspectives, drawing on psychological and cultural-philosophical ideas to create new, surprising connections between silence, quiet and rest.
Silence and being quiet are present in everyday life and in politics, but why do we talk about it so rarely? Silence can be cathartic and peaceful, but equally oppressive and unbearable. In the form of communication, we keep secrets to protect ourselves and others, but on the other hand subjects can be silenced with dictatorial posturing - a communicative display of power – and something can be literally ‘hushed up’ that needs to be disclosed. In unique and engaging style, Theodor Itten explores the multi-layered internal conversation on silence in relation to the self and emotions, demonstrating why it is sometimes necessary in our modern society. Describing and analyzing human behaviour in relation to silence, the book also draws on psychoanalytic ideas by outlining the power of silence in processing our emotions and relationships and hiding innermost feelings.
With rich narrative signposts providing thought-provoking and amusing insights, and interpersonal communication examined in relation to everyday life, this is fascinating reading for students and academics in psychology, philosophy, cultural studies, and related areas.

Preface This book deals with the praxis of psychotherapy, a healing art, which proceeds with all the ambiguities that come from encountering another person in the here and now
and which is never far away from the challenges of life outside the consulting room, from sanity, madness and human irrationality in all its manifestations. A key question for all in the field is
in whose name do we practice? Who do we ask if we don’t know the way? Which facilities do we bring into play from the great repertoire of our souls healing capacities, which is as strong as our
bodies? The soul’s resourcefulness on which the body depends is a fact of life.
The Tao of healing is a gradual process. Step by step. It needs what we call «patience». The way leads towards clarity of the real, the imaginary, the plausible and the wisdom of the heart. At
the centre of the psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic encounter is rhetorical honesty and emotional truthfulness. Most of the time, this meeting of two persons in the same room at the same time,
occurs within the common bounds of embodied self and souls. Content and context coexist in this task. So how do I do it? I entered the mental health field back in 1974, joining the London based
Richmond Fellowship, running half way houses, where folks could stay after they either left a mental hospital or us before they needed to enter one. While studying social and clinical psychology
I undertook an apprenticeship with the Philadelphia Association (Chair: R.D. Laing) in London. As a psychoanalytic and integrative body psychotherapist, I have endured my own visions of sickness,
woundedness, scarring of the soul, shepherding and providing an environment for healing to come to pass. The vulnerability of both patient and psychotherapist are important to acknowledge,
remaining truthful to the creative potential of the unconscious. Thus, the motto ‘Never against the Unconscious’. The musical enchantments of emotions, finding their way into words, which leave
the core, of the yet unspeakable silence, at the centre of our true being.
Dreams, imaginations, sensations, awareness of life as a somatic experience are the basis of what it is all about. Psychotherapy is after all an experiential encounter with another’s feeling,
seeing, hearing, sensing, thinking and intuition. The essence of transformation, of effectiveness in aiding change in how we live our life’s grand adventure, conditioned as we are in our
ambiguous naked alienation, is the feeling suffused therapeutic relationship. The music is played within its meaningful transference and sense making countertransference.
These essays, written over many years, speak to a politics of experience. They are a document of our contemporary psychotherapeutic wisdom in a troubled world.

A lot of what is done in the name of psychotherapy and psychology is driven by motives which are base, shallow and commercial. Theorising of the human condition too often follows the ideological fashions of the day, which can be described as biological/corporate fundamentalism. This toxic mixture not only mystifies the general public but also makes epistemological slaves of professional psychologists. As neo-liberal capitalism continues its forward march, this book considers its influence on the divide between academic psychology and the psychotherapeutic art of healing. This has made the relationship between the practical and academic sides of psychology deeply problematic as well as dishonest. Theodor Itten and Ron Roberts explore these issues from their respective positions on each side of the psychotherapy, academic psychology divide. Calling for a return to a new, authentic and vibrant Politics of Experience, their examination, elaborating the interplay of practice and theory with everyday experience, is both personal and critical and provides an unusual insider perspective on what it means to practice in the present

First published in 1960, The Divided Self by Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing (1927 - 1989) set out to explain psychosis as an ordinary and understandable human experience. Laing's insight was absolutely revolutionary in its humane approach. One commentator described it as 'that particular touch of genius which causes one to say "Yes, I have always known that; why have I never thought of it before?". Collected in these pages are writings critically appraising Laing's life, work, frailties, brilliance, and his wide and varied influences over the last half century. You will find transcripts, memoirs, newly commissioned articles and a few previously published papers. Contributions have come from colleagues, friends and clients, as well as people who never knew him personally, yet deeply appreciate his work. Each is different in tone and character. Each captures something unique about Laing and his work. R.D. Laing was famous for his empathic perception, sagacious intellect and wisdom of the heart, as well as his rebelliousness and falling from grace. In reading this book you may be made to rethink some of your assumptions. We hope that you will find more than a little inspiration.
Exploring the language of myth, religion, and literature, this book evokes an understanding of how rage has been assimilated into social discourse and also dealt with in ancient and modern times. The author draws from personal experience and the results of research and scientific studies to examine the physical and emotional causes and effects of rage. As it debates the effectiveness and value of psychotherapy in providing a secure environment for people overwhelmed by rage, this profound consideration encourage readers to ponder every aspect of rage and how it influences one’s psyche.
